Well, fanart of popular characters is usually what gathers attention and popularity. I myself prefer to draw my own original characters just for the comfort factor of it. As much as I'd like to draw fanart of characters I enjoy, its really their design aesthetics that inspire my own creations. But theres no better or worse thing to draw. Both are plenty good!
i tend to draw more OC's but leaning towards trying some fine art but id go with seems better creative wise
